Dr. Aalami authors Guidelines for the Design of Post-Tensioned Floors
          Read Article >>

ABSTRACT: This article presents a set of guidelines intended to assist designers in routine post-tensioning design, beginning with a discussion of the initial decisions that must be made to design post-tensioned floor members. We then provide a set of recommendations, derived from industry practice, which have yielded economical designs with good in-service performance. Where applicable, we based the guidelines on ACI 318-02 and IBC 2000.

Title: Guidelines for the Design of Post-Tensioned Floors
Author(s): Bijan O. Aalami and Jennifer D. Jurgens
    Publication: Concrete International

ADAPT used to design first Post-Tensioned structures in three countries
Using the ADAPT software system, structural engineer Louis Mathot of Gamaco (Belgium), in collaboration with Freyssinet, designed the first post-tensioned structures in three major capital cities. Each prominent project, using unbonded post-tensioning system, was designed using ADAPT software, and was the first post-tensioning building project in its country. These projects are:
    • Parking structure in Moscow, Russia, approximately 540,000 sq ft (50,000 sq m)
    • Parking structure in Istanbul, Turkey, approximately 1,600,000 sq ft (150,000 sq m)
    • Parking structure in Bucharest, Romania, approximately 214,000 sq ft (20,000 sq m)

Mr. Mathot also designed one of the buildings of the Brussels, Belgium International Airport, which has an approximate floor area of 1,600,000 sq ft (150,000 sq m), using the ADAPT software system and unbonded post-tensioning.

ADAPT consulting highlights
ADAPT is currently retained as a specialty consultant by prime structural engineers in the design of a number of notable structures, such as:
    • Post-tensioned dome of Fumerole at Roden Crater Art Center in Flagstaff, Arizona, a creation of the artist James Turrell, designed to remain crack- and maintenance-free for centuries
    • Post-tensioned floor of KIM-KAE Agricultural Center 56,000m2 (approx. 560,000ft2) in Pusan, South Korea, with unusually high live load
    • Using temporary stays, segmentally constructed Arch Bridge (NH21) across the Beas River in Himchal Pradesh, India
