Our Vision

As part of ADAPT's ongoing commitment to the global concrete design community and the advancement of the application of pre-stressing technologies, Dr. Bijan Aalami has made educational and practical seminars one of the principal activities of ADAPT over the last twenty-five years. Design engineers in Panama, Singapore, Latvia and Brazil relied on ADAPT software and consulting to successfully establish the practice of unbonded post-tensioning in their countries. Dr. Aalami's qualifications as a Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at San Francisco State University, a registered Structural Engineer in California, and a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom, together with ADAPT's extensive design experience worldwide, provides the knowledge base upon which ADAPT seminars are developed.

    Descripcion del Curso:
    Dr. Bijan Aalami Este curso le provee al Ingeniero las herramientas y el know-how para un diseno eficiente y economico de edificios postensados. Ofrece los ultimos desarrollos en tecnologia constructiva, revision de nuevas provisiones en el Codigo ACI-318-08, procedimientos de diseno y software.

    Despues de una breve introduccion de los sistemas actuales de postensados en la practica constructiva, el curso continua con los aspectos economicos de los tendones adheridos y no adheridos y cubre conceptos practicos de diseno y procedimientos de diseno para vigas, losas en una direccion, losas planas en dos direcciones apoyadas sobre columnas.

    Cada paso se documenta con literatura, ejemplos y simulaciones de computador. El curso continua con la demostracion de tecnologia de punta en modelacion grafica de estructuras para el analisis y diseno de sistemas de piso, incluyendo el uso eficiente de dibujos de AutoCAD, la integracion con la ultima tecnologia de modelacion de informacion de Edificios (BIM) de Revit Structure y la generacion de modelos usando las herramientas del software de ADAPT.

    Se presenta un proceso integrado para la generacion de calculos estructurales, planos para construccion de refuerzo y postensados, y estimacion de cantidades de construccion.

    El seminario incluye ejemplos practicos de diseno por computador y la integracion eficiente con el software de ADAPT de los resultados de analisis gravitacionales y laterales (sismo y viento) de software de terceras partes como ETABS.

    Este curso le provee al Ingeniero las herramientas y el know-how para un diseño eficiente y económico de sistemas de losas de concreto, especialmente postensadas.

    Programa Tentativo:
    • Revisión de los últimos códigos y practica en el diseño de pisos de HA / PT para resistir cargas laterales (sismo). Revisión de cálculos estructurales típicos, diseños y detallamientos, incluyendo Códigos y Standards como ASCE 7-05, ICB 2006 y revisión de nuevas provisiones en el Código ACI-318-08.
    • Integración racional de diseños basados en análisis de pórticos multipisos (ETABS, Robot, Staad Pro, RCBe?) revisión de conceptos y procedimientos, seguido por ejemplos prácticos.
    • Ejemplo detallado de calculo manual de un sistema de piso postensado usando los requerimientos del ACI 318.
    • Diseño para acortamiento de losas postensadas debido a efectos a largo plazo como flujo plástico y acortamiento, incluyendo medios para mitigar agrietamientos debido a las restricciones de los apoyos. Ejemplos.
    • Ejemplo practico de diseño: Revisión de un diseño real de un sistema de piso postensado utilizando software de ADAPT, incluyendo análisis, diseño, planos estructurales y de fabricación, paquete de memorias.
    • Otros Tópicos específicos de importancia para ingenieros estructurales (se trataran algunos de ellos):
      • Deflexión a largo plazo y cumplimiento con códigos establecidos.
      • Momentos hiperestáticos debido al preesfuerzo, determinación y consideración en el diseño.

    Post-Tension SeminarThis course is offered in collaboration with Imperial College London's Centre for Professional Development. The course covers developments in post-tensioning design technology, construction practice, economic advantages of post-tensioning and design software tools. The primary lecturer of the course is Dr. Bijan O Aalami, the renowned world leader and teacher in the design of concrete buildings, bridges, and special structures. Additional lecturers include Mr. Robin Whittle, Dr. Florian Aalami and Dr. Neil Tsang. Mr. Whittle is Chairman of the Concrete Society Working Party, which has been responsible for updating the technical design handbook TR 43, "Post-Tensioned Concrete Floors". Dr. Florian Aalami, is a specialist in construction technology and software application. Dr. Tsang is on the staff of Imperial College London and is an expert on time and temperature dependent behavior of concrete.

    At this seminar, participants will:
    • Review current post-tensioning systems and construction practice in building structures
    • Learn the concepts and procedures of post-tensioning design
    • Know the changes in the latest design code provisions for design of post-tensioned structures (EC2, TR 43 Report, BS and ACI)
    • Examine the economic advantages of post-tensioning
    • Become familiar with the industry standard software for design of post-tensioning
    • Acquire the skill of structural modeling of concrete structures using component technology

    At the hands-on training workshop, participants will:
    • Learn to model and design a post-tensioned column supported slab, a beam and slab floor system and a beam frame using ADAPT software

    Course Overview:
    This workshop series is specifically tailored for those interested in hands-on training in design and analysis of post-tensioned buildings. The course offers a thorough review and training of more advanced, yet fundamental concepts associated with the design of post-tensioned beams and slabs.

    Each workshop offers intensive, hands-on training of ADAPT-Floor Pro software in an interactive learning environment. Each participant will take home a greater in-depth knowledge of key aspects that affect the efficiency and economy of the design of post-tensioned structures as well as a better understanding of how to implement the use of ADAPT-Floor Pro in the design process.


    Tentative Schedule of Course:

    Day One: Theory and Background
    • Introduction to post-tensioning and post-tensioning sytems
    • Structural modeling of post-tensioned members; load balancing; secondary moment effects and computation; and other concepts central to post-tensioning design
    • Evaluation of post-tensioned floor systems for vibration; Stress losses in post-tensioning due to creep, shrinkage and other time-dependent factors
    • Restraint effect on post-tensioned structures - how to estimate the effects and mitigate its impact
    • Cracked deflection analysis - general overview of cracking and the effect on post-tensioned structures
    • Introduction to finite element analysis and its application for design of post-tensioned floor systems
    Day Two: Computer Workshop
    • Introduction to ADAPT software - Builder / Floor Pro
    • Computer-aided design process starting with importing of files (Revit or AutoCAD drawing), structural model transformation, loading, validation, meshing, analysis, design, reinforcement generation, reinforcement manipulation, and exporting of results to Revit and AutoCAD
